Caller ID and Called ID in a diverted/forward call...

Post by Eranga Udes » Wed, 12 Mar 2003 22:20:03

Hi All,

Let's consider a case like below.

Caller 'A' dials 'B'. B is busy or out of reach, so it diverts/forwards the
call to a Voice Mail system 'C'. When call comes to Voice Mail system what
are the Caller ID and Called ID values?

Can the PSTN switch be configured to give A & B, respectively for Caller ID
& Called ID?

How does the Voice Mail systems work to identify the Voice Mailbox and
Caller Party number.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Eranga

It depend upon the protocol that you are using for this service.   If you
are using SS7 or most flavours of ISDN then you can access the redirection
information elements.        There is a 'Redirecting Number' field defined
in both SS7 and ISDN which gives you the number of the phone that was
originally called.

Thus the caller ID will stay the same, the Dialed ID (DID) will become the
number assigned to your voice mail system and the 'Redirecting number' will
be the original DID of the phone number that was dialled by the caller.

In other protocols it is likely that either the redirecting number or the
original CallerID will be overwritten and lost forever....
