Linux/OpenGl and OpenInventor

Linux/OpenGl and OpenInventor

Post by Niels Hilbrin » Wed, 11 Oct 1995 04:00:00

I Have a very simple question :

I have Linux running on a pc, and Openinventor on a SGI.  If I buy a OpenGL licence,
ie an XServer with the GLX extension. Is it then possible for me to run OpenInventor
apps on the SGI and view them at home (via a modem) on my pc with linux ????

The simple answer is yes.

Performance over a modem may be pretty bad, of course.  You'd definitely
want to use Inventor's display listing capabilities to reduce
bandwidth where possible.

Open Inventor does require the GLX extension to be supported by your X
server, but Inventor should work with any X server that supports GLX.

I have done this, but it is v. slow over a modem - I have a 14.4k and
use ppp for the networking, and the opengl server from Metrolink.  OI
uses display lists intelligently so that helps.

What are Inventor's display listing capabilities?

1. Can Opengl and OpenInventor be used under linux?

I have just installed a linux on my computer, and I want to do some
graphics development by using Opengl and OpenInventor. Does anyone know
whether Opengl and OpenInventor can be used under Linux or not? Thank
you very much.

Sincerely,

Lao Zhiqiang
