Openings in face sets

Openings in face sets

Post by Rich Coutt » Thu, 05 Oct 1995 04:00:00

Hi,

I need to insert some openings in face sets for an architectural model,
i.e., windows in walls.  Because Inventor does not handle openings directly,
I suspect I have to convert some of the faces to be convex, e.g.,

        ____________________               ____________________
       /__________________ /|             /__________________ /|
      |                   | |            |                   | |
      |                   | |            |                   | |
      |    ___      ___   | |     \      |    ___      ___   | |
      |   | | |    | | |  | |    ==\     |   | | |    | | |  | |
      |   | | |    | | |  | |    ==/     |   | | |    | | |  | |
      |   | |_|    | |_|  | |     /      |   | |_|    | |_|  | |
      |   |/__|    |/__|  | |            |   |/__|____|/__|  | |
      |                   | |            |  /                | |
      |                   |/             | /                 |/
      |___________________|              |/__________________|

The problem is that because there may be many windows, all arbitrarily
placed, a (wall with windows) => (convex face set) converter is not obvious
(to me).

To complicate things, when viewing in hidden line mode, there will be lines
running to all of the windows.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
-Rich

Openings in face sets

The OpenGL's GLU library has a polygon tesselator that will handle
polygons with holes.  See the man page for gluNewTess for details.
You could use OpenGL to tesselate the polygons, and build an
SoIndexedFaceSet from the results.

PS:

A private email reply to you didn't work-- my mailer has no idea who
"rcoutts" is (you might want to fix that...)
