16 color icon to 16 gray scale ???

Hi,
is there any (easy) solution to change a 16 (256) color icon (bitmap)
to the corresponding gray scales.
I appreciate any hint.

Hello,

I know that there is a plug-in for Photoshop to import
16 bit (65536 levels) grayscale pictures.

But there is also a FREE version of our shareware software
that can import ANY (user programmable) 16 bit gray scale
format (Ascii too), process it and save as 8 bit BMP.
