how to use the 'persist' option in beta273

Hi,
I've got beta273 on Linux. When I start gnuplot with the command
      $ gnuplot -persist
and the at the gnuplot prompt when I enter the command
     gnuplot> load 'inputFile'
 I get the following messages:

    bad option
    X11 aborted

and no plots are drawn.
I am not sure how to use the 'persist' option. The terminal type
is set to x11 (it shows when I enter gnuplot, and also I verified
it by giving the command 'show terminal'). I've also tried to
put the following command in the .Xdefaults file
    gnuplot*persist: on
but it does not seem to have any effect. When I exit from gnuplot
the graph window also disappears. If you have any idea please

Thanks,
Sikander

1. 'persist' option in beta273 gp3.6?

Hi,
Someone told me that there is a new 'persist' option in the beta 273
of gnuplot. This 'persist' option is supposed to leave the graph
on the screen even if you exit from gnuplot.
After compiling it (with help from you guys) when I run
gnuplot and enter the 'Help' command I don't see any ''persist'
option. Is there any option in this new beta 273 which allows
the graph to remain on the screen even if we exit from gnuplot?

Thanks,
Sikander
