motion blur and post render mel

Some alias bugs never get fixed. This one has been there for ages.

If you render from the command line with motion blur enabled, then your
post render mel script only gets executed at the end of the sequence
instead of between frames. Does any one know how to fix this?

motion blur and post render mel

Not a clue as to how to work around it, but bugs that have been around for
ages require serious lobbying and holding product manager's feet to the
fire at Siggraph and anywhere they are more public relations sensitive.  So
many pieces of software I've know had something like this that somehow just
never made it far enough up the list of things to fix to actually get
fixed.  I've come to view the number of cronically un-fixed bugs as a
primary health indicator for the organization that produces the software.

Of course there are always cases where a bug is fixed when I didn't know
about it and I'm still navigating around it years later like in a
meaningless ritual.  :)

motion blur and post render mel

Hello,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble, but it works fine over here... I get
the MEL script executed after each frame, whether MBlur is on or off.

Ouch!  That would hurt my bare feet!  You could just try asking...

Hmmm thats interesting.
Does this work for a command line render ?

In my setup (maya2.0 unlimited irix6.5.4f O2 r10k) the post-render-mel
only gets executed once at the very end if I have motion blur enabled

Thankyou for taking an interest Shai.
Your comments gave me a reason to investigate this further, with some
confidence that the problem was external to maya. And you are absolutely
correct. My problem was due to the way my post-render-mel and associated
shell-script interpret the "frame number". As long as the frame number
was an integer everything worked. As soon as it became fractional (as is
the case with motion blur enabled) my script failed.

In hind sight this should have been an easy error to spot, but it has
eluded me for some years now.

Once again, thanks for your interest.

regards
david

1. Simulating motion blur, post BMRT2.6...

This may be slightly off-topic, so apologies if you're just not
interested.

I have rendered a sequence of images using BMRT2.6 as part of an
animation running at 100 frames per second. That's a high frame-rate, I
know, but my animated objects are pretty nifty too, and in the absence
of motion blur in BMRT2.6 I thought I should run at that speed to try to
compensate. However, I'm finding it difficult creating a digital video
which can run at that speed and maintain image quality, so I started to
wonder if there are any practical schemes I could employ to simulate
motion blur by combining multiple frames, and thus reducing the the
number of frames. For example, combining every 4 frames in some way, and
running the animation at 25fps.

Many thanks for any help provided.

John.
