Attach Surface problem

Attach Surface problem

Post by Daniel Kochlowsk » Sun, 24 May 1998 04:00:00

I'm having a problem with the Maya modeler or better the Maya Modeler is
a problem.
OK, I want to attach two head halfs but it doesn't work!
I model a head by drawing two curves which start in the mouth. So when I
try to attach the two halfes I have to "connect" the two curves on the
upper head and the two on the chin. But it doesn't work.
So far the best results I got by using the stitch tool but it does only
work for two curves because the head is then one open object and stitch
does only work with two different object.
When I model in PA 8.5 I just have to select the isoparms I want to
connect and everything is fine, but I want to do the same in Maya
because it's an "high-end" package and it must perform those things with
ease.
But when you connect Isoparms you get strange results. Connect the first
two isoparm and everything is fine, but when I connect the other two ,
the first two open. I tried every Option in the Align Surface window,
but nothing worked so far. Open/Close surface is also very bad because
it doesn't keep the shape and I don't know why there is a Preserve Shape
Checkbox (doesn't work).
How can I make a picture a template to use as modeling reference like in
PA. The only way I found in Maya is to make an Imageplane in the camera
attribute or to model a plane and asign it as a texture and go to
textured mode, but both slows Maya to a crawl!
Some solutions???

Daniel

The attach tool in Maya sucks, basically.  I'd do it in PA and import to
Maya.  Maya has some great modeling strengths, but this is not currently one
of them.  An alternative is to duplicate all the curves in one direction (U
or V) and re-loft (skin in PA lingo).

cheers,

jt

hi daniel,
did you see my post re imageplanes on an I2 extreme?
Someone suggested that this slowness is due to lack of graphics
hardware, and imageplanes being done in software. (Since image planes
appear to work fine on our O2s im assuming you are also on an indigo.)

I am having the same problem, I cannot seem to be able to connect or
join anything together!!Although this has been discussed before, I still
cannot believe that with such an expensive prog, you are unnable to
simply create your nurb models, convert to poly and Boolean bits.

1. attaching surfaces problem

how can I attache leg and foot without getting these problems?
(www2.hs-harz.de/~u15489/frau_lofted2.jpg)

I inserted isoparms on both, so that numbers and place are the same.
Now I try to attach or align them, but it won't work.
I already tried to reverse surface direction, but it doesn't
change anything.

Would be glad, if you could help. thx
