i thought that would really help for compositing..

While a setup like that would be nice, it's certainly not required. I would
stick with a standard desktop for a while, for just starting out you'd
really be overkilling it with a dual xeon. I have a 1.4 ghz Athlon T-bird
with 1.5 gigs of ram, with a Geforce 2 card. It runs pretty well and I have
no complaints so far, although I would like a faster processor to boost
rendering time.

You can run Shake on Intel also.

i only have a p3 800 mhz...with a quadro 500

Yea..im a newbie too. Ive only been using Maya for a few weeks. Its hard but
