WANTED: Animator for contract work

Post by Bill Leona » Tue, 11 Mar 1997 04:00:00

Hi!

I need someone to do a quick turnaround brain dead simple animation...

Gold coin spinning with a logo on it, nice environment reflections, etc...

This only has to be like an inch by an inch (it's a web animation).

You then need to composite this thing (mayb 15 frames total) onto a
background that I give you, and either give me the finished frames or make
a complete animated gif out of it for me.

We've had this exact thing done once before, but the company changed their
name and my original animator is unavailable....

I'm guessing 3 hours of work max if you know your stuff.

Please get back to me asap if you're interested!!

This can/will lead to other jobs in the future.

See ya.

Either that or he's got you on his mailing list now of people interested
in animation products. I'm getting sick of all the junk e-mail (J-mail?)
I'm getting lately!!!

On behalf of Bill Leonard and Interactive World Wide Web Design and
Consulting...

I did receive a reply, in fact I have received two replies. And so have
apparently 10 others.

When someone posts a request for work like this, I'm sure the incoming
email load is more than they expected; quite possibly more than could be
replied to in a timely fashion. Furthermore while a reply might be
considered courteous, it is certainly not a requirement/rule/law or
whatever. Since they need a custom animation/logo I doubt they have used
or plan to use what you sent them.

As far as people preying on your work, here's a simple solution. Overlay
a copyright or just your company name on the face of the artwork or
animation. They will either pay you to remove the text, use it as is
(which is almost free publicity), or use somebody else's work.

Your accusations are blind and potentially damaging to the party they
were directed to.... and completely inappropriate. If you see your
animation on their page, then complain, but until then, SHHUSH!

I was out of line and may have read the whole thing out of context and
overlayed my own bad experiences on what was probably a legitimate
request for graphics.

WANTED: Animator for contract work

Post by jwri.. » Mon, 17 Mar 1997 04:00:00

What a case-study!  I've learned more reading this thread than I did
reading the book "Graphic Artists Guild Handbook-Pricing and Ethical
Guidelines."

I hope this situation is not at all typical, but it certainly is
telling.

1. I commend Mr. Bennett for the unequivocal retraction of his flame.

2. The bid solicitation itself is demeaning, to wit:
    > > I need someone to do a quick turnaround brain dead simple
animation...
Would you dare solicit a bid (esp. in person) from a plumber in that
manner ?
At the least, he would certainly charge you $50 for the bid itself.

3. Mr. Weiss' accidental posting here of his bid reply and sample
animation is also revealing.   And the quality of his sample indicates
Mr. Weiss has professional expertise.

Comments ?
