I just recently reached the 50 user max limit on SBS. I need to move
exchange to another NT 4.0 server. Can you just copy the dir.edb, priv.mdb
and pub.mdb to another server and get your mailboxes and mail running.

Dave
by no means is it that simple
You should read the various articles on the Exchange 5.5 website and at www.slipstick.com on disaster recovery of Exchange 5.5 which is essentially what you want to do.

1. Restore SBS 4.5 Exchange to NT 4.0 Exchange 5.5?
First, I apologize for the cross-post; based on prior
posts all groups seemed likely candidates.
I'm trying to migrate from Exchange 5.5 on Small Business
Server (SBS, smallbiz) to Exchange 5.5 on Windows NT 4.0
(NT). I did an online Exchange backup with 'ntbackup' on
the SBS server, and set up the new server ('setup /r') with
identical settings (site, organization, etc). After reloading
the Information Store (IS) and Directory Store (DS) using
ntbackup on the new server I try to start the IS service
and get the following:
"The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
returned service-specific error 1006"
When I check the application event log I find the following
two events:
"Failed to determine whether the Microsoft Small
Business Server version of Windows NT is used"
"Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information
Store service. Error 0x3ee"
The error goes back to:
Error 1006 (0x3ee) ecBadConfig
I tried running 'isinteg' to check the database integrity, but
every time I try I'm told I need to start and stop the IS first
before running - which of course I can't. I also get a JET
error.
Am I being led to believe that I can't restore an SBS Exchange
server to regular Exchange? That somehow the IS and/or DS is
tagged with a specific OS version? Has anyone run into this
and fixed it, or have any ideas?
My other option would be to migrate by converting to PSTs
first, then moving and reload those. Does this sound like a
viable alternative if reloading a backup won't work?
I had thought about doing an offline backup and moving the
physical databases around, but I figured if they're tagged I'd
be in the same boat as with the online backup above.
Thanks greatly for any help!
