Dedicated Mail Server

Dedicated Mail Server

Post by Bob Floy » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi to all,

I think I'm going to finally get my long awaited static IP!!!  Couple of
questions.

First I want to host our own mail server by adding a dedicated server for
this, (if needed?).  What is the best way to get the existing mail from one
server to the other?

Also we have added another company with it's own Domain Name.  Can
MSExchange handle two different domains?  If so how?

TIA

Bob Floyd

You can't install the SBS copy of Exchange on a separate server, so you'd
have to buy a full copy of Exchange Server.  There's probably an upgrade sku
on the SBS web site.

However, unless you are expecting a tremendous volume of mail, this is
probably not necessary.  I'd just reconfigure the existing SBS/ Exchange
Server for the new connection type and see how it goes, before spending
money on something that may not be a problem anyway.

David is right on the money here
This version of Exchange was actually designed to do just what you are planning.

You can run the Exchange Optimizer and move the location of the stores if space is the issue

Your existing configuration should work just fine on both counts.  Shouldn't
be a problem unless you are expected a large amount of mail traffic and
other Exchange use, but you'll notice that pretty quickly.

1. Exchange won't retrieve mail on dedicated connection

We have 2 NICs connecting through a router to a dial-up router connection.
Exchange will send mail ok but is not retrieving anything even though there
is inbound mail.

Exchange is set to connect to the pop3.demon.co.uk using their IP address
rather than the domain name. The routing protocol is set to route for pop3
inbound mail.

I've hunted through the KB and the jsiinc hacks to no avail.

Any help appreciated.

TIA

Mike
