SBS4.5 to SBS2000 upgrade on new machine

Post by j.aver » Fri, 28 Dec 2001 07:43:50

hello all:

I have a client that is ready for hardware and software upgrades on
workstations and the server. I did not perform the original SBS installation
and it is often somewhat flakey so I'd like to 'start from scratch' with the
new server.

1) if I take the new server and install the original SBS4.0 software, will I
be able to *cleanly* apply SBS2000 without to much difficulty?

2) would there be a simple enough way to port my SBS4.5 Exchange (on the old
server) to the SBS2000 (on the new server)?

Thanks in advance.

p.s. Are there any good books/whitepapers that will help me get up to speed
quickly with 2000server and XP-Pro ???

SBS4.5 to SBS2000 upgrade on new machine

I'm not that experience in SBS but I am in the process of installing
(upgrading) a client from SBS 4.5 to SBS2000 on a new server.
I am installing SBS2000 from scratch on the new server and bringing over the
data (including the e-mail boxes/data) from the old server to the new. (I'm
not installing sbs4.5 then installing sbs2000...when you start the install
for sbs2000, at some point it will ask you to insert the CD for 4.5 as proof
if you bought your sbs2000 as an upgrade)

There is a good MS knowledgebase paper on this migration process. It's in
two parts. (don't have the Q# at the moment, just do a search on
installing/migrating SBS2000)

Good Luck.

If you do a scratch install on the new server, you can just start with sbs
2000.  There's no need to install 4.0 or 4.5 first.  If you have the old cd,
the upgrade installation will prompt you for it during the install, to
verify that you qualify for the upgrade version.

1. SBS4.5 to SBS2000 Upgrade using a new server

I've just been looking through these and Microsoft
knowledge base articles looking to see if anyone has a
best practive methodology for migrating Exchange data over
from an existing SBS4.5 server to a new SBS2000 one. The
biggest issue I'm trying to get resolved is the Exchange
data.

I'm aware of a product MS provides called EXMERGE that
will export/re-import all of the users mailboxes, but
wondered if I could insert the new Server into the
existing NT4 Domain and therefore pull all the users/sids
etc over to the WIN2K server/active directory? Could you
then install SBS/Exchange 2000 and do an offline restore
of the Information store? Anyone been through this same
process?
