Moving SQL database between SQL and MSDE.

Moving SQL database between SQL and MSDE.

Post by Andrew M Gerick » Sat, 13 Jan 2001 00:40:51

Hi All,

First off, I am totally new to SQL, but one of our major software apps is
being converted from a Btrieve database platform to an MS database platform.
Thus my question:

From time to time I want to be able to take the database home to work on it
in the evenings. I understand there is a detach and attach proceedure which
I need to follow. Could anyone help me out with how to go about this, and
then the reverse proceedure when returning to the office? Bear in mind that
in the office, the database is running on the SQL7.0 component of SBS 4.5,
but at home I am running
MSDE 1.0.

Thanks for any and all help.

Andrew
You can install at your home a desktop version SQL 7 which will make this
process easier - the version is part of the MS-SQL 7.0 product
Regarding taking data - it depends what is the changes that you do at home
if it only several tables you can do Transfer objects back and forth
this may be slowlto you ( it is relative slow process versus backup or
detattach /attach)  but it is the simple way
hope It Helps

1. Moving from MSDE to SQL 2000.

All -

I installed a SharePoint Team Services server that I built for a
client
about a year ago.  When I installed it, it automatically installed the
MSDE for SQL 7.0.  Now I need to migrate to a new server upon which I
have installed SQL 2000 and SQL 2000 SP2.  I have been reading the
instructions at:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/pr...

but I have hit a snag.  It tells me to make a backup of the database
on
the old server using Enterprise Manager.  Well, MSDE doesn't come with
Enterprise Manager.  So, being the bright cookie I am (NOT!), I fired
up
Enterprise Manager on the new server and connected to the old server.
I
ran the backup, storing it as a file on the old server.
Unfortunately,
it doesn't restore on the SQL 2000 server.  I imagine it is a version
mismatch.

My question is this:  Can I just copy the database from the old server
to the new server using the DTS Import/Export Wizard?  I am thinking
that I should:

1) Right click on the database on the old server
2) choose All Tasks
3) choose Export
4) choose the MS OLE DB Provider and the source database
5) choose the MS OLE DB Provider and define a new database on the new
server
6) I think I should select Copy Objects and Data Between SQL Server
Databases instead of just Copy Table(s) and View(s)

Does that sound right?  Or am I smoking crack?

Thanks a bunch for any input!
