It's easy on a surface level, below that it can be very difficult until you
understand how Max does things. There are numerous concepts that need to be
understood in Max before you can really get anywhere with it. Once these are
understood, it's then just a case of learning it all, very deep, very steep
and very good.
Foundation training in Max should help a lot.
Don't know where you'd get it cheap though, see if the institute can get you
a student copy.
