Material Editor not opening

Post by Kurt Soni » Sat, 19 Jan 2002 18:10:16

Hi,

I was hoping that someone may be able to help me.  I recently reinstalled
3DS Max v2 onto my PC - I cannot get the Material Editor to open.

I am running Windows ME with 256Mb RAM. I have unistalled the product and
reinstalled back to the same machine and the problem still persists. I have
also tried installing to another machine that is running W2K and the
Material Editor opens no problems.

Has anyone run into this issue with Windows ME before?  Has anyone got any
ideas as I would love not to have to rebuild my PC :-)

Thanks

Kurt

Well, first off ME is shit. Stick with 2K.

Just read what Render8tor wrote. ME is a sort black plaque of the operating
systems. Avoid it if you can. I've heard nothing good about it and some of
my friends who tried it moved to W2K.

These two are correct Kurt, Windows 9x/ME uses a different type of internal
resource management, which Max was not designed for. These OS's are
consumer-grade, not workstation-grade. Running a massive application like
Max on Win ME is the equivalent of driving a big rig through a residential
neighborhood. Sooner or later, it will get stuck!

Excellent analogy, Mark! I like it. :-)

It is also possible that it is opening but it is off the viewable
screen,,Hey it happens at times,,,, try removing the 3dsmax.ini file
and re-starting max to see if it reappears on your screen

Speaking of "off the screen", I know there used to exist a tiny little
program which could return those lost windows and applications back onto the
viewable display area. I'll be darned if I can remember the name of it, but
if anyone has seen anything like this, please share.  : )

I once did something and the material editor disappeared down to a mere
title bar. I tried everything even rebooting but it wouldn't come back,
in the end I simply dragged the window back to size.
Stupid I know but it happened

1. MAX 2.0 HANGS when opening Materials Editor!

Anyone,

MAX 2.0 hangs or the processor (a 333mhz PII) maxes out when I open the
materials editor or when I change anything in the editor, like say add a
bump map. It's a 15 to 30 second hang. I'm using the software driver but
that shouldn't matter. This problem doesn't occur on the PPro200's in
the studio? What's the deal?
