{HELP} Recommend a Desktop Pub. App

Post by Soultru » Sun, 14 Jun 1998 04:00:00

I need help deciding on a good Desktop Publishing App, maybe some of you
can make suggestions. My needs are simple, I just want a program that I can
add text over images, photos and graphics, and when printed everything will
look good, especially the text.

I love Photoshop for manipulating and enhancing images but whenever I try
to insert text and print it out, the text looks like crap, so I'm pretty
sure Photoshop isn't the right thing for that. I need to import the stuff
into other apps for that purpose.  I just need something that is good for
making flyers, signs, CD covers, etc. . .

Thanks for any help,

Soultruck

Nope, I'd bet that the images you are printing are low resolution and
the text looks like *because of that.... If the image is being
printed on a typical home printer (ink jet or cheap laser) then you
should use about 300 dpi for the image and the text should look fine.

You could always use MS Word... You can import the images you create
in PS (after you save them to an importable format) and add text and
other graphics on top / behind as desired.... Word may already be on
your machine..... If not, try MS Publisher... It's cheap and easy to
use for that type of stuff - I think it even has CD Cover templates.

Maybe Pagemaker might be worth a try.

There is a special class of software for page layout composition.
QuarkXPress 4.02 - for making very complex, but not very big
publications generally "by hand". Useful for newspapers, magazines,
advertising sheets etc.
Adobe PageMaker 6.5 - for making less complex, but big and very big
publication layouts such as books. Strong scripting addition makes
possible using PM as "automatic layout system".
Adobe Frame Maker 5.5 - for making documents of very complex information
structure (complex cross-reference srtuctured, for example) such as
technical or science reports.
All these systems created to use raster and vector images as
illustrative material and have great tools for text and layout
processing.

Try Microsoft Publisher. You can download a 30 day free trial version
(full function) from microsoft.com.  It's a good program when your needs
don't call for more advanced DTP features in PM or Quark.  It also costs
a fraction of the other two.

I do not download MS products, if I wish to evalute them I go to their site
and place a request for a free cd, which they promptly send me (to date
Publisher98, Project98, Frontpage98 with Image Composer etc etc. It is also
a source of latest dll's...just say you are a company.

For what you describe, I would opt for Microsoft Publisher. It is simple,
cheap and will alow you to do simple color seps. Street price is about $75
at last check.

Microsoft Publisher ate my C: drive when I tried to uninstall it. It was
NTFS, if that makes any difference, and ScanDisk was unhelpful; NT Setup
said it was a corrupted partition and I had to reformat...

1. Your thoughts : Desktop Pub. Career Opportunities

I'm interested in making a career change in the near future and I would like
to know your thoughts on the field. I was hoping to hear from some of you
who have spent some time working at a service bureau or other similar
desktop publishing vocation so I could get some advice from some of you
pros. I have been in the traditional (non electronic) publishing business
for some time now. So I understand the pre-press functions. I have a
background in art and photography and in my spare time I have been teaching
myself several publishing programs this past year, to see if I enjoy it and
so far I find it fascinating.
I've been working on a PC platform and have so far been learning the
following programs; CorelDraw 8 graphics suite, Adobe PhotoShop 4, PageMaker
6.5 and Illustrator 7 & QuarkXpress 4.It sounds like a lot, but some I know
better than others.
I would like to begin a dialogue with a small group of  folks to discuss
the above mentioned programs as well as general information about the field.
If you're interested in helping me out leave your Email address and a little
background and you will hear from me soon.
