Illustrator 4.1 and Win95?

Post by Ala » Mon, 09 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Hey...

Obligatory off-topic declaration...I'm sure this has been covered already...
sorry for once again bringing this up, and in the Pshop newsgroup to boot.

Does Illustrator 4.1 work OK in win95? I understand that Adobe sez that it
does, and that also that it is not logo compliant. Any problems? 4.X wouldn't
work at all, and I'm thinking of upgrading and don't want to waste my dough.
Also, does anyone know when (finally) Illustrator 5 will be released for the
PC platform? (I know, I know. Get a mac)

Thanks,
alan

Adobe put out an upgrade of 4.0 that's supposed to work better w/ win95, I
have it, it appears to work ok. Illustrater for mac runs circles around
the pc ver.4.0, freehand is a better choice on the pc side

If you have an S3 chipset in your graphics card, watch out -- you might
crash in Preview Illustration mode. That's with 4.0; I don't know if 4.1
is any better. To echo a recent thread: customer support at Adobe is a
pain in the gluteus maximus, to be sure, but if you persevere, they will
help you out with this. You need to change the line PREVIEW MODE=0 in
your Illustrator *.ini file to PREVIEW MODE=1. This keeps the program
from calling the S3 driver. This means your screen rewrites are
miserably slow, and to keep away from Diamond S3 cards especially. I am
told that Number9 cards with S3 chipsets do not have this problem,
however.

Seems that a consensus has emerged. Quite a number of people have mailed me
saying exactly what Pete has said. Guess I'll get freehand until the phantom
Illustrator 6.0 or 7.0 for win shows it's face.

Thanks for all your info,

I have 4.1 running under Win95 and it seems to work mostly fine.

I do have a problem with the video display-- lower portion of screen is all
scattered as if the program didn't load correctly, but that only happens in
one of the 3 (or so) available "view modes".

Adobe says that's a particular problem with any video card using the S3
chip (which mine does) and not with others.

Personally, though, I never use this program (if you want it cheap, mail
me).  A friend bought it and figured out that Photoshop was more along the
lines of what he wanted to do, so I got it from him, then found out the
same thing.

My own soapbox: when will Adobe make them one and the same?

Anyway, hope that helps.

Cheers, Eric.

I can get mine to run, but not perfectly.  If you find anything out, I
would be MOST grateful if you could mail me your solution.

Thanks in advance, Eric.

1. Illustrator 4.1 crashes WIN95

I'm running Illustrator 4.1 under WIN95 on a Gateway G6-200. I select freehand
drawing and draw an object. When the mouse button is release, or the pen is
raised from the art pad, I get a Windows Fatal Exception error (blue screen)
0E at 137:BFF9A08C. Any ideas?
