                        CALL FOR PAPERS

                Papers due: 15 November 1998
                Notification of acceptance: 15 January 1999

DESCRIPTION:
At the turn of the century, the age of Visual Information Systems (VIS)
has arrived. Enabled by picture sensors of all kinds, visual
information will not only enhance the value of existing information,
it will also open up a new horizon of previously untapped information
sources. There is a huge demand for visual information access on the
consumer side, and the handling of visual information is further boosted by the
rapid increase of hardware and Internet capabilities. The technology for
Visual Information Systems is more urgently needed than ever before. What
is required are new computational methods to retrieve, index, compress and
uncover pictorial information, new algorithms allowing access to very large
databases of digital pictures and videos, and new systems with visual
interfaces integrating the above components in new types of image
databases. The construction of VIS represents a radical departure from
building conventional information systems, and many novel issues will need
to be addressed: query formulation, consistency management, indexing and
assessment of quality.

The conference will include, but is not restricted to, the following topics:
              * Content-based indexing, search and retrieval
              * Image databases
              * Visual data modeling
              * Visual information system architectures
              * Feature (invariant) retrieval
              * Picture representation languages
              * Query models
              * Optimization of pictorial queries
              * Compression and image content
              * Visualizing pictorial and non-pictorial information
              * Hypermedia of picture and text
              * Parallel processing in visual information systems
              * Image crawling the web
              * Picture book browsing
              * Delivery of visual information
              * Application areas of visual information systems
              * Interactive segmentation
              * Video databases
              * Benchmarking

After the two successful events in Melbourne and San Diego, this is the 3rd
Visual Information Systems conference. It also follows the first workshop in
Amsterdam on Image Databases and Multi-Media Search.
