Need app to make images into desktop backgrounds.

Does anyone know of a procedure/application to turn images (JPEG) in
desktop backgrounds?  I have looked in the numerous FAQ's and can't find
anything on  doing this.  It seems that this should be possible.

Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at DeskPicture? If you just want "wallpaper" style
backgrounds (i.e., repeated fields) and are running system 7.5 or higher,
you can paste the image into the Desktop Patterns control panel. (You may
need to increase the memory partition size for Desktop Patterns to get the
JPEG in.)

After Dark 3.0 also does this. Works on multiple monitors too.

I!ve been using Decor on 68k and PowerMacs for some time now. It can
display JPEG files and some other graphic formats. You can find the
latest version at http://acacia.ens.fr:8080/home/pottier/mac-soft.html

Try a shareware app called Deskpicture.  You should be able to find it at
popular mac ftp sites.  Most apps like this use picts though.

In system 7.5, I just cut and paste from a jpeg viewer into the Desktop Patterns control panel to create a new desktop image.  The b=
igest picture you can work with is 64 x 64 pixels.

Underware will allow you to put a full size (640x480) picture on your
desktop as well as other cool backgrounds. Now Fun also has the same
ability, and a shareware program I believe it was Decor allowed you to do
it. The only draw back for these programs is it usually costs you about
300k to keep the image there.

I found this to be the case.  I tried DeskPicture and it works just as
advertised.  Unfortunately you can use up a lot of memory if you want to
install a nice big image as your desktop background.  Either that or you
can choose to store the desktop background on your hard drive (a la VM)
and it will be extremely slow when your system does screen updates of your
desktop.

I don't know if this is the same as the freeware app. called DeskPict, but
DeskPict is what I use. It requires that you create your art and save it
in StartupScreen format, then place that file in the System folder with
the name deskpicture. I've been using it for a long time and had no
problems with it. I create and save my backgrounds in ColorIt! and just
rename the selected picture "deskpicture" when I install it in the System
folder.

DeskPict is the original version of what has become DeskPicture.  It's
currently up to version 4.01.

It's now shareware, and has a slick user interface for placing up
to 16 pictures on each of your screens.  It can rotate through a collection
of pictures periodicly or at random.  When you place a picture on
your screen you can resize and crop it.  It can handle a variety of
graphics formats including PICT and GIF.

You can find DeskPicture at the URL below...

Guys, guys, guys! Forget Deskpicture already!

The best desktop picture app by far, IMO, is Dcor, currently version
2.6.1. This amazing bit of software will place PICTs on your desktop with
a minimum of setup fuss. It will scale them to your screen if you like,
maintaining aspect ratio or not, as you like. It will dither colors
intelligently and put a border of any color around the pic if you don't
want to scale it and don't want to see the desktop pattern either. It will
redraw the pic when you change screen depth, or not, or hide the pic until
you return to the startup depth.

And best of all, Dcor can actually cycle the PICTs in a folder or volume,
randomly or in order, according to a schedule you set! Say you can't
decide whether you prefer to look at the Grand Canyon, or a McLaren F1, or
Miss December. Put them in a folder and tell Dcor to cycle between them
every day, or half hour, or two minutes. Or just point it at your HD and
tell it to search subfolders recursively and it will find every picture on
your HD, randomly or in order.

Next to Zterm, this was the most worthwhile shareware fee I ever sent in.
(No, I don't have any connection with the author. I've just been waiting
for this since ColorDesk.) It's available via ftp from nic.switch.ch and
many other places, usually in info-mac.

Why should we forget DeskPicture?  From your description of Decor, the two
programs have nearly identical feature sets.  Since they're both shareware,
it's a simple matter for anyone to download both from Info-Mac and compare
them for themselves.  It's not like we're talking about making a
QuarkXpress vs. Pagemaker type of decision here, with hundreds of dollars
on the line.
