Zbuffer - reflections, refractions possible?

Are there algorithms out there for having reflections and refractions
in a rendering pipeline which uses the Z buffer?

What kind of 'special effects' are possible using the Z buffer
algorithm apart from shading, antialiasing, and shading?

Any references would be appreciated.
