URGENT: Transparent image edges

URGENT: Transparent image edges

Post by Ahmed Mata » Fri, 31 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I need to create gif images whose background is transparent and have very
good quality edges. For example, suppose I have a gif image of a fish on a
white background. If I open this image in paint shop pro 6 and set the color
transparency to the color of the background (white), I now have a gif image
of a fish with a whose backgound is transparent. When I display on a white
surface. It looks very good. However, when I display it on a colored surface
(e.g. green) The edges look bad with small white traces on them and they
look kind of fuzzy. I also tried using the enhance edges tool in psp 6.0 but
that doesn't really make my image overall look good. I really need to create
image with a transparent background that have high quality edges. I need
this for an application I'm developing where I will need VERY high quality
images with a transparent background to be diasplayed on different colored
surfaces. If you know any techniques using any software to do that or
anywhere I can find such images please tell me ASAP.

Duh... you have to have different images for different backgrounds.

One image can't be used on any background.

URGENT: Transparent image edges

Actually, you CAN do it, as long as the edges of the graphic are not
anti-aliased (smoothed). The only problem with this is that at lower
resolutions, it's fairly obvious, the images will still be "jaggy".. But at
least they will not have the "halo" effect.

Most programs anti-alias edges automatically, I often wind up having to
remove it by hand if I'm post - processing a graphic for someone else.

The main disadvantage to this is that the image will not appear "smooth"
against the background, as it would with an anti-aliased pic (your image
drawn on a white background, for example). The other disadvantage is that if
you decide you want to go this route, you pretty much have to do it with all
the graphics, because it would look pretty obviously different from
anti-aliased graphics.

So while it IS possible, I'm not sure if you'd be completely satisfied with
the resulting quality.
