Conversion from gif/jpeg to Adobe Illustrator format

Post by Lijiv Kh » Wed, 22 Aug 2001 18:52:13

Hi,
I have an image which I wish to convert to Adobe Illustrator format.
I don't have Adobe Illustrator. Is there any other program (preferably
free) which can do this?

I believe that you can use jpeg2ps to convert to EPS format.  Do the
files absoultely have to be in AI format?  If so, jpeg2ps is not what
you want to use...

Many vector based drawing formats can save in .ai format. But are you
sure you need to do this? Is this what happened: Your printer asked
"This is low resolution raster file. Do you by any chance have it as an
Illustrator file; it would print much better?". In this case, converting
the raster file to .ai does not help anything.

Post a link to the graphic and it might be possible to convert it
... have to see the image first.

That is not true.

Conversion from gif/jpeg to Adobe Illustrator format

The peoblem with "it's in Illustator format" is that it is not clear definition.  If you just open a gif or jpeg, or any other raster image that Illustrator can read, and then save it as AI or even Illustrator EPS, is it "in Illustrator format?"  Humm, could be, but when I think of Illustrator format I think of art that has specific lines and shapes and things I can maniulpate, and opening a raster in Illusrator is doing to result, at first, in just a big raster image object.

Things such as Mike C.'s Truckin example can be made using Illustrator's outline features, or even easier using Streamline, which is made for the job.  Then, when you're done, you have something you can work with.

use Adobe Streamline to convert bitmap to vector art. Obviously works best
with images where edges/lines are clearly defined and have no blends. Not
good with photografic images.

Of course it is.

What's that got to do with our topic?

Listen you guys, it's a matter of terminology -- read my post of 08/22.  And Lars, both of your Truckin samples are still JPGs, which really doesn't say anything about being "in Illustrator format".  Opening a raster image and saving straightaway as AI is questionable enough as to whether it's "in Illustrator format", but doing a "export as JPG" from Illustrator is even further away.

The image started out as a bitmap image and was converted to a
illustrator vector image.  I then saved it after it was converted
back to a bitmap so that you could view it online.

Understand yet?

You are confused.  The Trukin image was originally a bitmap
image.  It was converted in Streamline to a vector image, it was
then resaved as a bitmap.

The images were not done by "Lars".  They were converted by me,
using Streamline.

Thanks, I think most of us understand, and I don't think I'm confused at
all.

But my point is that if you (or whomever) want to make an online example of
bitmap to vector, showing a Web page with two JPGs really doesn't give one
much to go on: it could very well be just a Photoshop-made file with the
brown taken out, the contrast cranked up, and the words "Vector Graphic"
placed in the corner.  The image could point to the JPG for an on-screen
picture in a browser, but the file that you get when you right-click should
be an EPS or AI, if that's what is to be demonstrated.

================

By the way, has anyone noticed that the one person who had the question to
begin with has not responded?  (I can't get to comp.graphics from here,
however.)  That (apparently) the only ones propagating this thread are the
ones that know about graphics????

That should be good news, for once.

Take it or leave it.  That is what you get.

The bitmap was converted with Streamline.  Believe it or don't
believe it.

Shrug.

1. HELP, Please with Adobe Illustrator/Acrobat Conversion

I have a couple of Adobe Illustrator 8.01 files that I am taking into Adobe
Acrobat to convert them into PDF files for Internet posting. When I make
outlines of the fonts, the letters tend to look hairy or fuzzy on screen.
They print out with no problem--it's just the screen looks weird.

Most of our clients are going to look at their screen and wonder what in the
world happened to the file...can anyone give me any insight into how to
correct this on screen?

Thanks for any help you can give me, and please respond to me at
