OpenGL Optimizer opviz: data size limits?

Post by CJ Holm » Thu, 29 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I wrote an extension to the data module in Optimizer
example application opviz, to look at some rather large
vector fields.  These fields are on the order of 256 to 512 cubed.
When my code runs on a small field, opviz works well, but when
I try it on larger datasets, I get:

*OP Warning:  sfldLoader:      Width = 192
*OP Warning:  sfldLoader:      Height = 128
*OP Warning:  sfldLoader:      Z_dimension  = 192
*OP Warning:  sfldLoader:      Xrange  = 0.000000 to 192.000000
*OP Warning:  sfldLoader:      Yrange  = 0.000000 to 128.000000
*OP Warning:  sfldLoader:      Zrange  = 0.000000 to 192.000000
*OP Warning:  sfldLoader:      Reached EOF at record 4718593

...window opens, bounding box draws,
I type t and g to get the hedgehog and touch the mouse, then crash with:

GL:Wait Rdata timed out!  Partial dump follows:

I'd appreciate any help with this error condition.

TIA, Colin.

This would be a gfx bug in InfiniteReality.  You should
contact support, and open up a case.  Did you get a kpm
dump from the system?  That will be useful, and any other
messages in SYSLOG.

Specifically, something bad is happening during a
readback, the kernel gets impatient, and shoots
the pipe dead.  In any case, this is our bug...
so, you should open up a case with customer support.

Thanks,

1. Plot page size and data limits...

I have two questions I was hoping someone could help me with. I've looked in
the faq and the manual and didn't find these addressed.

First, is there a way to change the default page/plot dimenstions in
gnuplot?  I'd like to generate a plot for legal or 11x17 paper, or better
yet, a plot to print on a large format plotter (several feet in width and
arbitrary length).

Second, I've been amazed at gnuplots ability to plot large data sets.
Unfortunately, I managed to kill it on a 3 month data file with 1 second
samples.  I assume this is largely due to an insufficient amount of ram on
my machine and not some other limit in gnuplot.    My question is simply,
will a memory addition do the trick, or are there some hard limits to the
number of data points gnuplot can plot?
Or is there perhaps a better way to make a plot of this magnitude?

Thanks in advance,

-Val
