Transparent texture maps in POVray? (was: no subject)

Post by James Rivenbar » Sat, 03 Feb 1996 04:00:00

When at firtst you screw-up ...

I'm wanting to make a texture from a gif and I only want one color to be
transparent (like green screening) Does anyone know how this can be
accomplished using POVray?  I've tried using transparent gifs, but the
"transparent" color just shows up anyway.

thanks,

You need to use a paint package to determine which colour value in the
image is the transparent one, and then tell POV-Ray that it's
transparent, explicitely. I forget the exact syntax. Just look up image
maps in the manual. xv's a good program for finding the background colour
index.

I seem to remember an example of this on the insert/poster that comes with
the POV/CD.  Could be wrong though.  I don't have it with me to check ...

use the "filter #" keyword in the image_map block where # represents the
index of the color you want transparent.  You can add as more than one of
these lines if you need more colors to be transparent

1. Transparent Textures in POVRAY

Hey Raytracers,

I've got a problem using semitransparent textures in POVRAY 3.0.
I use vertical polygons over a horizontal plane to represent trees. As
texture I apply an image in Targa format, using a fourth channel as
transparancy factor. This works very well, except I'm using fog. The
transparent part of the texture shows the object behind itself, but does
ignore the fog.

I'm using fog_type 1.

Does anybody know an answer?

Thanks

Philipp

PS: I've already raised the max_trace_level
