I too have had the sad icon and it comes from either bad
software or from the machine haveing a CD left in the CD Drive
I have. The machine will try to start up from a CD left in my
Drive if I forgot to take it out. I have the same problem on
Mac 580's and LC III's with CD-ROMS. I have a lab full of Macs,
and on occasion see the sad mac icon. To Once it shows up on a
system, it tens to reappear more an more often, even if I get
the system to startup. I found it is best to use the disk first
aid utility on a regular basis to catch these software screwups
before they get to the serious level. I found also that if it's
a CD left in, even a paperclip won't eject it. I have to hold
the eveck button in while I turn on the "on" swithc on the Mac.
It then ejects and if the system software is not corrupted, it
will startup. I hope you get it squarted away.
