What do you all think of the NEC CD-74 CD-ROM Drive? I have a chance to buy a
slightly used one for $400 with registration card and boxes, etc...
a good deal, or not?

I have a CD-74 CD-ROM drive I purchased from EDUCORP at Macwold a
year ago.  It is reasonably fast and operates OK, except for the
Kodak Photo CD problem...  It would not even mount the disks
until I got a copy of their latest driver.  It mounts the disks
now, but the images are garbage.  Reportedly I can upgrade the
drive for $250 (which involves sending it back to them and they
send a new unit), but haven't decided if I want to do that yet.
Also, I have read that some of these CAN'T be upgraded in this
manner; not sure if mine is in that group or not.

I believe the earliest ones needed a ROM revision for Photo-CD access.
One of the selling points of the CDR-74 was the socketed ROM, so it
SHOULD be upgradeable.

I have a CDR-73M, which is a CDR-73 mechanism with CDR-74 circuitry.
It reads Photo-CD's (I've only tried single session) when connected
to a Mac IIsi and using sufficiently recent drivers.  That's a very'
good price for a CDR-74.

1. NEC CD-ROM CDR-74

The Problem is with the drive's operating system, which doesn't support
a 512-byte-block transfer. I didn't try Spaceship Warlock with the
new NEC-driver V. 2.2.5, but getting this new driver might help a
bit.
