John Major can't be that exciting!

He's rumoured to be in Edinburgh next week for 'Lifelong Learning
in a Wired World', an educational conference organised by SCET.

I don't know what he's doing the rest of the time. Apple Expo at Olympia
this weekend? ;)

Ok, then, picking up on another thread herein - how much does it cost to
fly a Vulcan to anywhere in the UK?  And while we're at it, are all the USAF
bases in the UK closed down yet?

;-)

cheers

It appears that he is wooing Major and Blair to ensure that any
government Superhighway projects use Wintel technology.  Let's just hope
that any government would not be too close-minded on this issue.  The
problem is that Gates will give stuff away (as a marketing/advertising
ploy) which I don't think Acorn would/could! :-(

Government purchases are often politically biased (look at the MoD for
evidence).  I hope they see the benefits of promoting UK Plc by buying
Acorn for their new InfoKiosk thingies.

Didn't he once ask of Acorn "What's a network?" ?

Maybe he's come this time to ask "What does compact mean?" ? :-)

Perhaps an offer for the education side of the DofEE since he expects
to corner the Internet. We can all hook into 'distance learning' and
be brainwashed as associate Americans.

I'm either rolling in the floor laughing or banging my head on the wall weeping at the
sheer naivete expressed in this statement.

It's not the flying that costs money, it's the site licence from Captain
Kirk that's an arm and a leg! :-)

Refer to the 2 Billion contract that MOD went into with IBM for a network
(the same one as the Olympics used) makes all this "investment" in Acorn look
like peanuts, it's wonderful to see our goverment wisely filling the coffers
of other nations companies , whoops we arn't protectionist  tho' are we!!
this is a global economy or should that read monopoly!! If Acorn do do well
some stupid equivelent of OFTEL will be sent up by our goverment to rip it
to pieces in favour of the competition... 8^o

Perhaps he has come to sign a deal allowing Acorn , to include a NT kernal
in the next ROM set so that we could run windows apps native, after all it
wouldn't be that radical, wasn't NT supposed to be portable accross all
hardware types and all that was needed was a core kernal to interface to the
major part of the OS, nah  just a thought!!

Bill Gates Flies Into UK For 2-Day Political Visit

LONDON, ENGLAND, 1996 NOV 6 (NB)
-- By Steve Gold. Bill Gates, Microsoft's chairman, flew into the UK on
Sunday evening to hold a series of meetings with the British Prime
Minister, John Major, along with the leader of the opposition, Tony Blair,
and to meet with school children and business leaders. The purpose of the
visit, which ended yesterday (Tuesday), was to allow Gates to share his
views on the impact that technology is going to have on British education
and business.

Now, do you think the Parties know we have three different computer
platforms (Acorn/PC/Mac) in education?

Saying about NT on Acorns.  Did anyone see the advert in either Computing or
Computer Weekly this week for Arm Ltd.  They want s/w engineers etc to go
and work there on NT based stuff.  I can't remember the full gist of the ad
as I no longer have my copy of the relevant magazine.

1. Bill Gates in UK Where & why?

You appear to be referring to my editorial in the May 95 issue of RISC User
when I said:

"Now think back to 1989, when today's graduates were in secondary school..
which child would be getting the better grounding in today's computing
techniques - the one using the DOS command line on a 286 to run single-
tasking programs, or the one using a RISC-powered Acorn with a
  multitasking GUI?"

I was commenting on an article in an Internet magazine that claimed schools
had wasted 10 years by becoming wedded to Acorn technology.
