Firewall & Linux

Firewall & Linux

Post by Nils C. Hertzber » Fri, 04 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Hi there!

We are planning on connecting to the Internet with a permanent ISDN
connection, but are a little concerned about the security issues.
So, we gathered we'll need a firewall between the Internet and the
server.

We are a small company, so we'd like to make this as cheap as
possible, and I understand that a firewall implementation on
a PC with Linux will be the most affordable solution.

What do we need in terms of software and hardware, and what
would be the approximate costs of obtaining this.
I'm a "UNIX/C-guy", so I can do the programming myself.

Thanks,

Nils

Setup a small Linux box (486/8Mb) with either:

1. IP-masquerading (http://www.xos.nl)
2. TIS Firewall Toolkit (http://www.tis.com)

Do you plan to use a seperate ISDN router or equip the Linux box with
an ISDN card?

You might consider using the Squid caching proxy server
(http://squid.nlanr.net) to save some bandwidth, but this requires
more computing power (Pentium/32Mb).

You could run this on your firewall, make sure you also filter on your
ISDN router, or install this on a machine behind the firewall.

If You, being in Norway, can tolerate a product in Swedish, check out
the Fuego firewall from Signum.  See the URL
http://www.signum.se/produkter/fuego or write a mail to

Fuego will soon exist in an international version with english and
german support also, but you have to talk to the guys at Signum for
more details.
