HELP, Watchguard Firebox and Content Types

Post by Strom » Mon, 20 Nov 2000 04:00:00

Hi all,
I have been beating my head against the wall with this.

I have been trying to allow only word, excel, powerpoint, project, PDF
file attachments through SMTP.

I have accessed the SMTP config/properties and content type.  I
entered "only types listed below".

I have tried the following standard Content Types.

  application/msword    -- accepted by Exchange
  application/vnd.ms-excel
  application/vnd.ms-powerpoint
  application/vnd.ms-project
  application/x-pdf

I found the standardized content types and it's interesting to me that
MSWORD is not included in the vmd.ms group.

  I have tried application/vnd.ms-word, application/vnd.ms-msword, even
application/word.

I can't get MS attachments to pass through the firewall.  I get the
usual ATT000##.txt in my emails.

Yes, I have made sure that the config has been saved to the firebox.
I've loaded the settings off it.  I've also powered it off.

Is it possible that the firebox needs a firmware update to allow
"new" content type to be seen?

  Thanks all for the help

  Stromm.

  remove "not.here/" from my email

If you look in the FB logs it should tell you the content type that is
being denied.

Since Watchguard uses mime types it is soly depending on the sending
SMTP client.

1. Watchguard http proxy type functionality outside of Watchguard?

Watchguard http proxy allows removal of browser information,
restrictions on content types, and removal of unrecognised tags, and
some other nice features.

I'd like to do something similar on a caching http proxy on Linux.
Ideally with selective cookie removal (Sorry preferences.com).  Don't
really care too much about the other features Watchguard http proxy
supplies at this point.

It doesn't need to be transparent, just unobstrusive - dropping in proxy
settings in the browsers is not a problem. Performance isn't yet an
issue.

Best tool I've seen so far is cgiproxy - which may be sufficent - but
what other options do I have?

Does anyone know if Watchguard wrote their proxy themselves or if they
are just using someone elses?

And yes I could drop Watchguard betwix cache and Internet, or between
users and cache, but at the moment that is not on the cards.
