WAN Miniport (UP) #2 WTF!!!

Post by Chris -Neuro » Mon, 26 Feb 2001 02:43:46

Just booted up this monring and found that this driver under the
Device Manager has an exclamation mark next to it. Number 1 I am not
even on a WAN so why is this installed in the first place. Number 2 I
certainly did not install it. Anyone have any ideas? The only
communication device I have is a USR 56K Modem.

Chris,

Next time, before you say WTF, you may want to read the manual first :-)

You could have easily find it if you do a simple search on RAS/network on MS
site or any other Info site...

Please refer to the following link...

BTW...  WAN miniport is for you Dialup networking.

1. WAN Miniport network adaptors

Does anyone know what the WAN Miniport listings and the Direct Parallel
listing that show under Network Adaptors in the Device Manager (only
when you choose View->Show Hidden) are used for?

Here is the listing for Windows 2000 Server (these were installed duing
initial installtion of Win 2k Server).

Direct Parallel
WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)

After using Backup Exec to restore our System State, the WAN Miniport
(L2TP) became 'visibile' and our network adaptor turned 'hidden'.

I had to remove these four Network Adaptors plus the normal adaport then
reboot to get Win2k Server to recognize use the network adaptor.

In the future, we are thinking of using VPN session and some of the
protocals that could be used are the L2TP and PPTP protocals.  Would
removing these 'hidden' devices have any effect on using VPN?

TIA,
Dave
