Recovering Disk Space

Post by Michae » Tue, 31 Jul 2001 00:16:21

Here is the situation my system has a drive C and D.  Drive  C is nearly
full.  I found a folder in C:\winnt\profiles\administrator\local
setting\temp that is huge... 954mb.
It looks like this folder contains every application that I have ever
installed in my machine.
I would like to know is it safe to delete this file?
Move this file to my D drive which have lots of space?
If I do move it how can I redirect new information to the new location?

Thanks for your help in advance.
Michael

The easiest way to clean up disk space is to use Windows Disk Cleanup (in
the Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools group).  That will give you the
option of deleting temporary files, among other things.

Gary,
This file is a hidden file and is not affected when I use Disk Cleanup.

my guess is you are logging in as administrator
if you delete that folder than you will loose your profile all the settings
you have made since u start using it
it is questionable even if you will be able to login if you delete it

Anything in the Temp folder is fair game for deletion.

... immediately after you reboot the system.  Otherwise it might crash on
you or lose some data :)

You could search for large files (> 20 MB) and delete any memory dump files
or program setup files.  I've found that *.GID (help index files) can
accumulate and take up space. You can erase them safely -- they will be
recreated if you use help.  You can also uninstall some programs and
reinstall them on your D drive.  I don't recommend compressing unused files
(in Win2K) since they don't decompress automatically when you start using
them again :)

I very much doubt it. Anything in use will be locked so you wouldn't be
able to delete it anyway.

that's assuming whoever wrote the program thought about locking its temp
files in use...

If a file is in use it can't be deleted.

1. Updgraded from win98 and can't seem to recover disk space

I have a 4 gig drive which used to have win98. I backed up all my files to
another pc and used win2k upgrade. I thought win2K only used 700megs, but my
hard drive properties indicate I am using 1.43 gigs.

According to my humble calcs I am only using 650megs:
C:\Documents and Settings        8 megs
C:\Program Files                     57 megs
C:\RECYCLED                        200K
C:\WINNT                           586 megs

So I don't understand why my C drive properties indicate I am using 1.43.

I wanted to do a clean install, but since I have the upgrade edition, I was
afraid of formatting my C drive because it would not recognize an
upgradeable OS.

Thank you for any help.
