Hi!

I have a computer dual booting Windows ME and Windows 2000. I suddenly
started getting an error saying that the Windows 2000 has a missing or
corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file and that I should reinstall the file. According to
the knowledge base, I need to edit the boot.ini file to fix this. but I
cannot find the boot.ini file. I have checked the option to view all hidden
files also. Any suggestions what i can do?

Thanks

Thanks Dave. I found the file. The following are the contents of the file.

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=10
Default=D:\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
D:\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional"
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

It still gives me the same error though. Do I need to change anything else?

Thanks

What was it before you changed it? How many drives, drive type etc., and what is the partition
information for each drive, which drive and partition is the \winnt directory?

Missing/Corrupted NTOSKRNL.EXE file

Partition Information

Primary DOS: C: 2.5 GB (WinMe)
                       E:  5.0 GB (Free Space)
Extended DOS: D: 5.21 GB (Win2000)

I originally had C at 7.5 GB (Windows ME) and D at 5.21 GB (Win2000) and it
was working perfectly fine. I resized the C partition using BootItNG and I
think that is when I started getting the problems. It wouldnt recognize my
Win ME installation and started giving me the error on Win2000. So I removed
BootIt and reinstalled WinMe on C at which point I think a completely new
boot.ini file was created and Win2000 was not even detected. I tried to run
Win2000 setup from WinMe to try and repair the Win2000 installation, it
loaded all the drivers etc. to C: and tried to do emergency repair but could
not find a Win2000 installation. When I tried to use the recovery console it
detected the WINNT directory but asked me for an emergency repair disk which
I didnt have. After that I just booted up to WinME and this was the boot.ini
file:

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Setup"
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

So I tried changing this so that it points to the D:\WINNT directory but
that still gives me the same error. At that point it was 5 in the morning
and I posted a message to the newsgroup.

thanks a lot for all your help.

Reinstalling WinME on the System drive C:\ destroyed the Windows 2000 boot sector. Try booting the
Windows 2000 Setup disks and choose "R" for Repair, then "R" to use repair process, then "M" for
manual repair, choose "Inspect Startup Environment" and "Inspect Boot Sector" only.

You'll need your current ERD to run the repair process. If you don't have a current ERD then you can
probably run the Windows 2000 install and choose to upgrade the existing Windows 2000 installation,
though you'll probably lose some system settings and will likely need to reapply your service pack
and any other updates or try manually creating an ERD. Don't run the upgrade from within WinME, boot
the setup disks or boot the cd-rom.

How to Manually Create an Emergency Repair Disk
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q158/8/66.asp

The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change to the \bootdisk
directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe( from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow
the prompts.

Your boot.ini should look something like this

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

Assuming one IDE drive

I tried making the ERD after booting to a DOS prompt. However the files in
the Repair Folder are 7.5 MB and obvioulsy could not be copied on to the
disk. These are the files in the folder:

AUTOEXEC.NT
CONFIG.NT
DEFAULT
NTUSER
SAM
SECSETUP
SECURITY
SETUP.LOG
SOFTWARE (5.62 MB)
SYSTEM (0.98 MB)

Dave, I just edited the boot.ini file following the example that you gave
and also noted in an article in the KB. They were talking about the same
error that I had but occuring when an additional partition is created during
installation of OS/2...So I decided to give it a shot...After making the
changes to the boot.ini file the computer boots up perfectly fine both in
Windows Me and in Windows 2000..didnt have to go through the installation
over again...

Thanks a lot for all your help...i really appreciate it.

1. Invalid BOOT.INI File and ntoskrnl.exe Missing or Corrupt

Hello all,

I was uninstalling a bunch of programs off my win2k pro machine to clear
some space. I also removed a bunch of my files which I thought for sure had
nothing to do with windows... but after I finished doing these uninstalls
and deletes I tried to reboot my computer but couldn't.

A few seconds after the computer starts to reboot I get this error for about
2 seconds:

Invalid BOOT.INI File
Booting from C:\winnt\

Then that error disapears and is replaced with this one:

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt:
<windows 2000 root>\system 32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

--Windows will not start in any Safe-Modes or other modes.
--I made boot disks on another machine and attempted to repair windows. The
emergeny repair option failed because it couldn't find windows, and I don't
have an emergency repair disk(I know I know..). The Repair Console option
let me select which installation of windows I wanted to repair (C:\windows)
then asked me for the admin password which I entered. It then produced a
prompt C:windows> but I don't know what to do from here.

If I chose to Set-up Windows2k instead of repairing it, would my files and
installed programs be destroyed?(This would be a nightmarish thought)

I'm running Windows2000 Pro on a PIII Dell with 128megs ram and 16gig Hard
drive. I believe my hard disk has not been partitioned(c: only), although I
have a "Virtual CD Drive" not sure if that affects anything.

How can I fix this PLEASE??
