Win2000 and Win98 Dual-Boot

Post by puentes22 » Fri, 11 Aug 2000 04:00:00

Hello-

I would like to install Windows2000 on a second HD installed as a
slave...There is nothing on this drive at all....I have Windows98 on the
master HD...The goal, obviously, is to have a dual-boot system....Any
recommendations?  Can I just run winnt.exe from Win98 or will that also copy
some system files to the master HD?  Ideally, I would like to have all
Win2000 files etc. on one hard drive and all the 98 files etc. on the
other...

Thanks..

Ok - you're pretty much right, a note or two though. If you're setting up
from within 98 run WINNT32.EXE, not WINNT.EXE. Make absolutely sure you do
not choose upgrade, choose clean install - later you will be asked where,
you can specify d:\winnt and this will set up your dual-boot. Some temporary
files are always copied to the active (boot) partition so you will need some
free space - this was (from failing memory) ~220Mb with NT4, but probably
much more for 2K. These files will be removed at the end of the setup, but
you will have a new boot loader, installed on your boot partition so some
files (boot.ini ntdetect.com and ntldr) will be in the root of C - don't
delete them. If for some bizarre reason, you're installing from DOS mode,
always type c:\windows\smartdrv.exe first or you will be old and grey before
its done. I would format my D: partition with NTFS during the install -
don't use fdisk to create a FAT32 partition and leave it, or convert it -
install into unpartitioned space and the set-up will then ask how you want
it formatted - choose NTFS to gain in-built compression, per file security
encryption etc. The problem with this is that to read files from Win2K in
Win98 you will need NTFS for Win98 (from www.sysinternals.com) or a policy
of always keeping datafiles on C:

Good luck

Isn't it a bad idea to have the %systemroot% as d: for Windows 2000,
or Windows 98 for that matter?

I'm worried about the practical effect of software arbitrarily copying
to c: instead of the correct one.

Or is it not a big deal?  I spent a lot of extra effort to create two
primary partitions and only have one active at a time, hence each one
becomes c: for it's operating system.

Is this too much worry or trouble to be concerned with?

Well for one make sure that you've formatted the 2nd HDD (slave) & ensure
that you've created NO primary partition on this SLAVE. Just create an
extended partition & a logical drive in this extended partition in which you
will be installing the root directory of Win2000.

Next insert the WIn2000  CD-ROM & it should AutoPlay & the menu will ask you
whether you'd like to UPGRADE your existing Win98 OS to Win2000. Choose
NO...

Then choose the option "Install Windows 2000" from the menu in the
"Microsoft Windows 2000 CD" box.
You'll be guided through the installation, & when prompted where to install
Win2000, point the setup program to the first logical drive of the 2nd
HDD...

Hope this is clear enough...
