Newbie needs help setting up DNS!!

Post by 9milbil » Sat, 08 Mar 2003 05:50:37

Hope someone can help me! I need help configuring a fairly
basic setup:

Single server running Win2000 (DC, using internet domain
name as part of FQDN) & Exchange2000 both SP3, ADSL
connected to Internet thru a firewall. 15 clients running
XP Pro and Office XP std. Each client uses firewall
provided DHCP, Outlook for email etc and IE for browsing.
Connectivity to Internet works OK.

What's the best way to set up DNS (or is there another
way?) for optimum performance, so that client/server
traffic stays on the LAN, but browsing and email domain
names are pointed to the Internet for resolution?

At the moment each client has the server AND an external
DNS server configured in TCP/IP Properties, and I think
it's causing excess and unnecessary traffic on the LAN. If
I remove the external DNS address from each client, LAN
performance is great, but Internet access fails, so I
suspect some sort of DNS forwarding needs to be
configured. I've read articles on the KB but they all seem
complex, and I reckon it's something simple I need to do.

TIA for any help

Yep, done that but it still doesn't seem right. Is this
really all that's required?
