Icon to show internet connectivity not showing up in system tray...

Post by Victor Einwohne » Tue, 09 May 2000 04:00:00

I just installed Win2000 Pro onto my system.  I am quite pleased to see that
I was able to get most (if not all) my hardware working within an hour
(which was one of the main reasons why I held back upgrading).  One of the
only little "Petty" things  I have noticed is that when I connect to the
internet now, I dont hear it dialing in, and also when I am connected, I
dont see the connection icon in the system tray.  I enabled it through
Network and Dial Up Connections.  But still, I have no luck getting the icon
to show up.  I am using Altavista's ISP...  I know I am connected because I
wouldn't be sending this out if I wasn't connected.  :  )

Does anyone have any advice on how to get the icon in the tray?  I dont care
about hearing the modem dial in.  I am more concerned about the icon.  I
have a Lucent Win Modem, 56k V.90, and the most updated drivers, 5.75.

Thanks in advance,
Victor

Go to "Network and Dial-up Connections" in the control panel.  Right click
the connection you're using to dial into your ISP.  Under the "General" tab,
place a checkmark in the box labeled "show icon in taskbar when connected".
Mine was checked by default.

That's what I did, but still no luck.  I placed the checkmark in that box
because it wasn't marked by default.  It still wont appear in the system
tray.  Thanks though.  Anyone else have any ideas?

Icon to show internet connectivity not showing up in system tray...

Yup...wait a few days. ^_^

That's what I experience the first few days, or the first week...of course,
I also
tweaked around the Network Settings...change modem drivers...made sure it
was accessing the com2 port at 115,000 bps....anyway one day I finally heard
the dial tone and it dialing...icon was there...etc...

Fidling around, reseting once in a while might help.

Icon to show internet connectivity not showing up in system tray...

So basically I should just wait :  )  or perhaps pray, LOL.  What exactly
should I play with in order to get this thing going.  My modem is showing up
on COM3 with 115,000 bps set.  I don't think it would be the modem drivers
being they are set for 2000...  What else can I fiddle with?  :  )

1. Modem/network icon in system tray no longer shows up

Hello all,

The little "connection" icon that normally shows up in the system tray
when a modem or LAN connection is in place has stopped appearing.

If I open "Network and Dial-up Connections" and then the properties
for the connection, "Show icon in taskbar when connected" is checked.

But I get the machine to dial up and establish a connection via modem
with the ISP,  while the connection is working:
(a) the icon is not displayed in the taskbar and
(b) if I look in "Network and Dial-up Connections", the connection is
still marked as "Disconnected" and the right-click menu offers a
"Connect" command and not a "Disconnect".

So (a) there's no easy way of telling I'm connected and (b) there's no
easy way of hanging up except to pull the phone cord out of the modem.

With a LAN connection, things seem normal apart from the fact that the
connection icon doesn't display in the taskbar; i can enable/disable
the connection from "Network and Dial-up Connections".

Toshiba P3480; Win2K SP1 with a fairly recent dose of Windows Updating
(but things worked normally after that) ; internal modem; IE5/OE5/
Agent 1.7.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what setting needs resetting?

TIA

With best wishes
John
