MS application Icons showing as Generic Windows icons

A few months back I installed a patch from MS and as a
result, all my MS icons (PPT, XLS, DOC) and some others now
appear on the desktop as Generic Windows icons.  Does
anyone know how I can get my icons back?  Other types of
icons are ok (ie. bmp, zip, real player, etc.)
