Graphics card set up to show 32bit colours, but only showing 16bit

Post by Rolf Barbakke » Sun, 09 Mar 2003 18:31:15

I have a Win2k Server with sp3 and all the latest hotfixes. The graphics
card is a Asus v8200 TI500 Geforce3-based card.

A couple of days ago I suddenly noticed that the icons on the desktop and
quicklaunch had fewer colours than normal. Also playing movies through
BSplayer generated warnings about "Overlay failed!" and "Display hardware is
not capable of color-space conversions. Switching to RGB".

No matter which drivers from Asus or nVidia I install this problem persists.
I havent found anything in the setup that should warrant this behaviour. I
have also switched to a older graphics card - a Geforce2 MX, but the same
problem is there.Removing and reinstalling drivers doesn't work.

What could be causing this?

Talk to the card manufacturer.

So you think its likely that the cards from Creative (the gf2) and Asus
(gf3) failed at the same time?

BSplayer preferences, change/switch the overlay method and don't force RGB.

That perhaps solves it for BSplayer, but my desktop is still running just
16bit colours.

Graphics card set up to show 32bit colours, but only showing 16bit

Problem solved.

Turns out NetMeeting had made the computer BSOD and this caused Direct3D to
be disabled. Starting NetMeeting again and exiting the program normally
solved the problem.

This is explained in KB-article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;249867

Weird, I say.

That's a driver issue, it also happens here if i don't install the 4 in 1
Via driver (ViaGart) as specified by motherboard manufacturer before
installing video card driver.

1. Graphics card set up to show 32bit colours, but only showing 16bit
