Network Interface repeatedly fails

Network Interface repeatedly fails

Post by Sean McRa » Thu, 01 Aug 2002 06:35:15

I have a Win2K server with 2 NICs installed, one for LAN
and the other for Wan.  I am sharing the WAN so the office
staff can get outside.

The external connection keeps being dropped, stopped,
killed or ... but at any rate, stops working.  I have
replaced the NIC and that worked well for about 1 month
but I am back to having the same problems.  I have looked
though log files for clues as to what is going on but have
found nothing.  I may not be looking in the right place.

Can someone please tell me what may be causing this or
where I can look for clues?

Thanks,
Sean McRae

1. directory service fails repeatedly

first, thanks for any help with this. this is a stand
alone, DC with integrated AD. it will be connected to the
internet eventually. during the install of DNS i chose
that there were other servers around and it wanted an ip
for my ISP's DNS server's. it didn't like the ip's i gave
it so i went back and chose "only server" and unplugged
from the net. then later deleted the "." zone. DNS seems
to work fine except when i run dcdiag, it says that no DNS
servers have records for the DC. they are on the same
machine.
second problem is that the event log tells me that " A
service principal name could not be constructed because
the provided hostname is not in the necessary format." .
along with this error comes another " the attempt to
communicate with the global catalog \\starband-server
failed ( due to the former error)".  if i go into AD sites
and services and uncheck global catalog, hit apply and
then check again and apply again. all is well for about a
half hour. the only other event that logged last time was
that DNS wrote a new version of the zone file, so i
thought it might be related to the first problem.
one more issue, how do i write a script file to log a
win 98 pc into my domain? when i ping "starband-server"
from the win 98 pc, it appears to work but it's using it's
own ip address that it got from dhcp on the server???
