Add DNS to the first AD server, make sure it is pointing to itself for DNS
in the properties of TCP/IP. If you are using DHCP to hand out DNS settings,
have DHCP hand out only your internal DNS server(s) IP address.
Add the 3 other Win 2k servers to the AD domain as member servers. If
necessary, run dcpromo on whichever one you want to be a domain controller.
You MUST have DNS that supports SRV records (Win 2k's or Bind 8.2 or higher)
for anything in AD to find anything else in AD.

1. request help: migrate NT4 PDC -> 2k AD, not able to add domain tree (setup AD)

I have set up a lab to help with a migration.

I installed two new BDC's online to my network, then put them on a HUB (off
my network).  I then setup a third computer Win2k server.

I upgraded one BDC to PDC, then upgraded that to Win2k server.  After that I
setup AD this same server.

I then used the 3rd machine (win2k server) and set it as a backup AD
controller.  Then successfully made it the primary AD controller.

I did this whole process twice.

Now the screwy part:
After doing the same process on the real network, i cannot install AD on the
upgraded PDC.

Specifically when I choose to create a new domain, then create a new forest,
it complains that the domain is "already in use" -- (maybe related: i can
only logon to that computer "computer_name(this computer)" not the domain --
it reports the PDC is unavailable or the pass is incorrect -- The PDC is in
fact the this machine, the one i just upgraded to 2k server)

Why did it work twice in the lab, but not in the real situation? -- all
service packs are up to date.
