Server Router Problem

Server Router Problem

Post by Myrt Web » Fri, 27 Dec 2002 05:39:58

I have an isolated network that I use in my MS
certification studies. I am trying to access the intenet
from this network using the modem/router on my internet
connected network. But it is not working.

This is what I did:

1. Installed a second external NIC in my server and
connected it to the hub my internet connected network uses.

2. Installed the router from the RRAS snapin.

3. Installed AD, DHCP, DNS all on the domain server.

2. Configured the above external NIC as follows: static IP
address of 192.168.0.5 which is within the range of the
dhcp scope of  my modem/router. Subnet of 255.255.255.0.
Default gateway of 192.168.0.1 the ip of my modem/router.
DNS address of 131.200.2.1 which is the address the domain
controller on my isolated network.

3. Configured the isolated internal NIC as follows:
131.200.2.1 static IP address of the domain controller
which provides the dhcp/dns services to the isolated
network. Subnet of 255.255.0.0. Default gateway of
131.200.2.1 and dns of 131.200.2.1.

The internal client computers are configured to receive
their dhcp/dns automatically.

From a client computer on the isolated internal network I
can ping within the isolated network. I cannot ping the
external modem/router and cannot access the internet.

I can access the internet from the domain controller.

What do I need to fix?

your internal NIC Should  have  IP,  subnet  DNS of  local  network,  no
gateway.
external should  have  IP  DNS gateway  of  external  side only.

Thanks.

Some improvement. I can now ping to the far side of my
external NIC 192.168.0.5 but I cannot ping the hardware
router at 192.168.0.1.

I looked at pctechnicians but did not see article that fit
what I am trying to do.

Thanks for the suggestion but it did not work.

I am going to reinstall and see if that will help. I
installed AD after RRAS and maybe this made a difference.

1. Windows Server: Router problems

I have got a server running Windows 2000 Server Edition,
with 5 stations connected to a network. Also, an ISDN
router connected to the hub.

Problem: Any time of day or night, a connection to the
internet is established without initiation from any user
and disregarding the rules on the router to disconnect
after 3 minutes of inactivity. A recorded time of >33
hours in one instance.

Please help, as the connection time in South Africa is
recorded per minute and the cost can be astronomical,
especially over weekends when my offices are closed.

I am a novice, but my software support company seems
unable to help me in this regard
