Please help with Windows Installer Problem - URGENT

Post by Jose A Villalobo » Wed, 13 Mar 2002 04:22:36

I have a W/2000 network.  One of the nodes is a stand-
alone W/2000 Server containing SQL Server and several
applications and is used for development.

I was uninstalling a Visual Foxpro application I no longer
needed. Midway through the uninstall I had to cancel it
because of an unrelated distraction, thinking I could redo
the uninstall later.

Later, when I reopened the Add/Remove Programs in Control
Panel, I found to my horror the app-listing grid empty,
except for the message: "There are no programs installed
in this computer"

Scrolling down on the grid, to another page, I found the
list of applications; however, the Change and Remove
buttons are unusable because there ALL grayed out.

Some of the applications already installed seem to be
working, others are behaving erratically. When I tried to
install a new small application, the system allowed it,
but the program failed with an error message:"Could not
start ActiveX..."

This is a major disaster and I am completely lost as to
what to do about it... If someone has had this problemn,
Please Help.

I cannot afford to reinstall Windows and all the
Applications I have on this server!!

It's possible that the problems you experience are unrelated to each other. For the Add/ Remove
programs problem....You can verify that the list still exists in the registry at
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

If so from the "Run" box try;
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\appwiz.cpl

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\webvw.dll
to rebuild several *.htt files

If unsuccessful try
sfc /purgecache

sfc /scannow

Or try the regedits described in;
Add/Remove Programs Tool Displays Installed Programs Incorrectly
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q266668

If the problem persists, you'll likely need to perform an in-place upgrade.

In any case I think you'll have better luck treating each problem separately and one at a time.

1. Windows Installer, Please Help

hey, I get an error while trying to install anything using
the
Windows installer. It reads:
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This
can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if
the windows installer is not correctly installed."

It's not in safe mode, and when i download the installer
from the microsoft site, and open it, it says the service
already exists.

Please email me if you have any advice.
