authentication on a 98 dial up server with windows 2000 and windows xp -- solution

key words authentication on a 98 dial up server

I can dial in from another 98 machine but when I try to dial in from a
2000 or XP machine it will not authenticate (either server). ( all you
can provide for authentication is a password)

I have upgraded to DUN 1.4 on the 98 machine and tried NETBEUI, IPX,
and TCP/IP.

What else do I need to do??

found this post a while back never really found a good answer
here my solution

create user account on the windows 98 dial up service
switch primary log on to client for microsoft networks
log on to the windows 98 box with newly creted user name and pasword

under dial up conneection on windows xp box select properties security
tab
select advanced (custom settings) select allow older ms-chap for
windows 95 servers

username on windows xp box is user name you created on windows 98 box
password for connection is password you create on dial up server (make
sure password for account is the same and dial up password on dial up
server)
domain name for the connection is the host name of the windows 98 box

this took me a few hours you find out and I could not find a soltion
for this question in a hour or so of reseach so thats why i posted
this
