dsclient.exe on win95 causes delay logging into win2k domain

Post by Billy Sh » Thu, 29 Aug 2002 19:50:08

In order to allow kixtart to process group membership rights on Win9x
clients, I had to install the Directory Service Client (dsclient.exe)
from the Server CD.

Although this works very well, it has introduced a delay of about
10-20 seconds before the login script is executed.

I have noticed a few posts on this subject from last year, but no
answers.  Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance
Billy

I have seen this too but have not seen a solution and I don't believe there
is one. I can only suggest that isn't it a little late in the game to still
be on Windows 95?

added security with DSCLIENT logon but as mentioned earlier....you should be
on 2000 Pro to appreciate the lower TCO.

dsclient.exe on win95 causes delay logging into win2k domain

Thanks for both replies. I hope to replace these machines next year
which will greatly simplify things. Unfortunately I have to live with
win9x for a bit longer.

I have removed the dsclient & the delay is also removed. Also, kixtart
can still determine membership of AD groups.  v. strange.

According to Microsoft Q239869, the dsclient replaces secur32.dll,
msnp32.dll, vredir.vxd, and vnetsup.vxd. this allows NTLM2 network
logon authentication.  If the dsclient is removed these files remain &
NTLM2 remains.

I shall try this on another win95 and a win98 machine to see what
happens.

Thanks for your comments.

1. dsclient.exe /q (postpone reboot on NT)

In preparation for Active Directory, we need to install the DFS client on
all of our Windows NT workstations.

Although "dsclient.exe /q" works fine on Windows 95 (where it really is
quiet and only prompts for a reboot at the end), that is not the case on
Windows NT.

On NT "dsclient.exe /q" is not quiet. All the dialog boxes appear followed
by an unprompted reboot. Using "dsclient.exe /q /r:i" forces the reboot
prompt to appear but only for an instant before the computer reboots itself.

Has anyone silently deployed the DFS Client to NT workstations? Ideas or
possible approaches anyone has to share would be most welcome.
