Comm software advice requested

Post by Jim Laws » Wed, 19 Feb 1992 22:43:16

I am looking for advice on obtaining a communications program to interface
with my external 9600 V.32,V.42 bis modem, handle X,Z,Ymodem, and Kermit file
transfer protocols

I currently have one program that emulates a dec vt100 with correctly mapped
numeric keypad (procomm) and a convienent dialing directory and host mode.

Another program that passes the modem status info back to me: ie carrier and
connect speed, data compression type used, etc (qmodem).

Yet one more that emulates a dec vt100 with correctly mapped numeric keypad
that is windows based.

I've listed them in order of importance to me and would WELCOME any input as
to what to buy or what shareware would fill all those req's

TeleMate 3.01 (available from SIMTEL20 & other sites) will do
everything you ask for - and is a true multitasking program as well.

It has 16 built-in protocols (including Kermit, X,Y,& Zmodem,
Telink, Sealink, etc) as well as slots for 5 external protocols, an
excellent editor, a sophisticated script language (equal to Telix in
power and FAR easier to learn and use), excellent macro capabilities,
and a host of other features including an extremely intuitive interface,
mouse support, and a "friendly attitude" towards Windows 3.x

I've used a number of telecommunications packages (including
earlier versions of TeleMate which didn't include a built in Kermit),
and NOTHING touches TM 3.01 for quality OR value (shareware registration
is $45 US and entitles you to lifetime upgrades and STRONG user support
both on fidonet and on Internet [via compuserve.com]).

        Hope this helps.

1. Advice sought for setup of network/comm system

First, apologies if the newsgroups are incorrect; pointers to more
relevant groups would be appreciated, and email responses are
preferred because I don't normally read these groups.

An associate of mine is interested in setting up a network/comm
system to meet the following general system requirements.

The hardware/OS environment is the IBM PC family running Windows
and proprietary software written in Borland C++.  The company's
application is GUI-based industrial controls.

They want a networking system to connect some local area machines,
some at the same site and some off-site but nearby.  Might also
be two local sites with several machines, interconnected.  Some
sort of LAN/ethernet system was envisioned for this.

In addition, there is a desire for machines across the continent
to be able to connect occasionally to the home machines to
interchange information.  This would not occur constantly since
the customer environment generally precludes a dedicated line.
The exchange would be statistics, program updates, etc.  Remote
control of some of the customer's software would be desired as
well.  The system also needs to allow the application software to
run on top in order to automate (virtually) everything at
the customer's site.

I am interested in recommendations for systems, hardware and
software that might be of use in this environment, comments
about what I am envisioning here (including criticisms),
or even references to more relevant sources of information.
E-mail is preferred.

Your help is much appreciated.

cheers,

-*-
