SCSI dveice problem with true64 UNIX.

Hello everyone.

I have met a problem with conecting FUJITSU MCD3130SS magnot-optic device to SCSI bus on
ALPHA XP workstation under the TRUE64 Compaq UNIX ver.5.0A.  I have switched the hard drive
emulation switch ON and could see new disk at /dev/rdisk /dev/disk directories, even I
could slightly manipulate with device using scu. But could not put new disklabel on disk.

disklabel -p dsk1

gives me
# /dev/rdisk/dsk1c:
type: SCSI
disk: MCD3130SS
label:
flags: removeable dynamic_geometry
bytes/sector: 512
sectors/track: 64
tracks/cylinder: 8
sectors/cylinder: 512
cylinders: 606
sectors/unit: 310352
rpm: 3600
interleave: 1
trackskew: 0
cylinderskew: 0
headswitch: 0           # milliseconds
track-to-track seek: 0  # milliseconds
drivedata: 0

8 partitions:
#          size     offset    fstype   [fsize bsize   cpg]      # NOTE: values not exact
  a:      32768          0    unused        0     0             # (Cyl.    0 - 63)
  b:      65536      32768    unused        0     0             # (Cyl.   64 - 191)
  c:     310352          0    unused        0     0             # (Cyl.    0 - 606*)
  d:          0          0    unused        0     0             # (Cyl.    0 - -1)
  e:          0          0    unused        0     0             # (Cyl.    0 - -1)
  f:          0          0    unused        0     0             # (Cyl.    0 - -1)
  g:     212048      98304    unused        0     0             # (Cyl.  192 - 606*)
  h:          0          0    unused        0     0             # (Cyl.    0 - -1)
#

# scu -f /dev/rdisk/dsk1c show capacity

Disk Capacity Information:

                  Maximum Capacity: 310352 (606.156 megabytes)
                      Block Length: 2048

I see the same number of blocks (310352) but different Block size 512 versus 2048.

and

# dd < /dev/rdisk/dsk1c > /dev/null bs=1024k
151+1 records in
151+1 records out

# dd > /dev/rdisk/dsk1c < /dev/zero bs=1024k
dd: UNABLE TO write complete record
166+0 records in
151+1 records out

Looks like driver uses only 512 bytes of 2048 bytes sector.

Before, I could connect different kind of SCSI dveice in hard drive emulation or native mode
to other UNIX even to DEC UNIX 4.0.

Any suggestion, please !

TRUE64 Compaq UNIX ver.5.0A syatem managers !

Could someone point me the  URL which describes HOW IT IS POSSIBLE to adjust SYSTEM
parameters to manage correctly HARD DRIVES with blocksize different then 512 bytes.

1. Alpha Linux vs. True64 Unix question

I am curious what opinions there are out there as to the
advantages/disadvantages of using Linux on alpha vs. True64 on alpha. I have
noticed many posts on True64 here and so I assume there are people on this
list who are very familiar with both OS's.
I am aware of monetary differences so please compare regardless of this.

Use: My own personal  firewall/webserver/proxy server as well as development
machine. Mostly developing networking related apps (point to point interface
types, sockets, servers, etc).

I am familiar with Linux and I have run it for a while on i386. I have also
used AIX and DEC OSF/ unix in the past so I am familiar with both but mainly
as a corporate user/developer not admin and ownership roles.

Just looking for opinions and suggestions.

Thanks,

Chris
