Can't boot into multiuser mode

Post by Timothy Jon » Mon, 24 Feb 2003 03:05:58

Hi all,

I just installed the latest version (5.1b) of Tru64 on my alpha 433au.
Problem is that I can't seem to log in as anyone other than root. I
just get the message:

Too many users logged on already. Try again later.

and then:

Login error, invalid user id.

I added the new accounts through the account manager. I've checked the
boot_osflags and they are set to "a", and in /etc/inittab it says
default runlevel is 3 (although there are no messages telling me I'm
entering this at boot time). Can anyone help? Could it be something to
do with not having installed the licence paks yet (cos I can't find
them!) as I get this in the console log:

Can't find an OSF-BASE, UNIX-WORKSTATION, or UNIX-SERVER license.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

Tim

Yes - you need the licenses installed first before anyone but root can
login.

Can't boot into multiuser mode

Hi Tim,

Yes, it sounds like your problem is license related, as the system
will not be able to allow multi-user mode until the licenses are
installed.

If you can't find the paper copies of the licenses, you will have
hopefully have carried out a pre-upgrade backup (vdump, dump, cpio
etc...). Or may have previous backups of the system, where you can
retrieve the information from.

I believe the license database is held in the directory: /var/adm/lmf

It might be worth a try, restoring that directory to its pre-upgrade
glory, which may get you around the problem.

Worth a try....

All the best,

1. Can't boot into single user mode OR multiuser mode!

I seem to have lost the ability to boot up at all!  My system hangs when I get
to the prompt asking me to enter the root password for system maintenance
mode, or enter ^D to go to multiuser mode.  Nothing I've thought of prevents
the hang.  The only thing I tried doing before this happened was installing
a BTLD (the smad driver) so that I can access a newly purchased zip drive.
Unfortunately, I couldn't load the BTLD at boot time (because I get an "out
of low memory" error), and I couldn't load it with "installpkg" because I
encountered several "mv: couldn't move because it's a read only filesystem"
errors.  Then when I tried going to single user mode, I got a "no entry in
/etc/utmp" error.  Then when I tried rebooting, I got stuck in this hang
nightmare.  Is there some way to fix this or should I considering doing a
reinstall (ugh)?
