The AU shipped with a Qlogic QLA1040B (later ones came with QLogic on board)
and I believe the lowest config for VMS and Unix was the Powerstorm 3D30
I was under the impression that they all came with the 2mb cache module
plugged on the CPU board but I could be wrong
From what I have heard the Cache didn't make much difference when running NT
but made a huge difference when running Unix and VMS so the concept that it
didn't ship with the NT system makes sense
Oh - and also Bill Gates got a chunk of Royalty on the -A's sold !

The 500a can take an external cache module, so I assume theQuote:> When Tru64 v5.0 boots on my -A, it says "no b-cache". I would be interested

Adding the cache module speeds some things up considerably
1. Alpha: Personal Workstation 433au
Hmmm.
The instructions are
(http:/http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/manuals/RHL-6.0-Manual/alpha-inst/...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.5.2.2 Booting the Kernel Diskette Using SRM
You can use SRM to boot your machine if a MILO image does not exist for
your specific system. Please ensure that have chosen the appropriate
kernel disk
image. For example, if you have an an Avanti board, use the SRM-specific
avanti-s image rather than the avanti image. If you are using a floppy
to boot, the
command line should look like this:
boot dva0 -file vmlinux.gz -flags "root=/dev/fd0 loadramdisk=1"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is all well and good but then:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.5.3 Starting the Installation
After the kernel boots, it prompts for a ramdisk. Remove the kernel
diskette, insert the ramdisk diskette, and press [Enter]. When the
ramdisk is loaded, you
should see the first installation screen.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
After "Partition check:" SRM says "VFS: Insert root floppy and press
ENTER". I insert my "ramdisk.img" disk - assuming that this is what is
meant - but it says "Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
02:00"
I have no idea what this means. Any one got a clue?
