looking for Embedded/RT Linux derivates?

Post by Rainer Birkenmaie » Thu, 17 Aug 2000 20:45:38

Hi everybody,

I'm actually putting together a list of available
linux derivates that support either real time or
embedded functionality (or both).

So far I found the following, are there more than
these? Are the features I mentioned correct? More
importatnt features?

Embedded:
- uClinux (http://www.uclinux.org)
   * optimized for small footprint
   * runs on CPUs without MMU
   * no memory protection
   * no real time capabilities

Real Time:
- RTLinux (http://www.rtlinux.org)
   * small RT-kernel running on HW with Linux as
     thread with lowest priority
   * full POSIX compatibilitie wanted (?)
- RTAI Linux (http://www.rtai.org)
   * small RT-kernel running on HW with Linux as
     thread with lowest priority
   * full POSIX compatibilitie but with a lot of
     additional features (?)
- RED-Linux (http://linux.ece.uci.edu/RED-Linux)
   * Linux itself gets RT capabilites, no need
     for RT-kernel as above
   * in early development (?)

I would really appreciate your help!
Thanks
-Rainer

Montavista (http://www.mvista.com) has a realtime scheduler for Linux
(amongst other Linux stuff)

TimeSys (http://www.timesys.com) also offers a realtime scheduler or
Linux.

: So far I found the following, are there more than

: importatnt features?

there are more than 20 EL-distros out there,
Blue Cat Linux, White Dwarf Linux, Hard Hat Linux, EtLinux ...

: - uClinux (http://www.uclinux.org)
:    * no real time capabilities

RT-Linux 1.x was ported to uClinux some times ago, have a look at:
http://www.realtimelinux.org/CRAN/uClinux/contrib/kwonsk/rtl/

: Real Time:

add Linux/RT, KU-RT Linux, SMART-Linux and qlinux

Question -1

I would like to know the differences between these three products .
I believe embedded is superset of RT and RT is superset of general
Linux .
