NetBSD/68k on PowerBook 180?

NetBSD/68k on PowerBook 180?

Post by Eugene Zaikonniko » Fri, 08 Dec 2000 04:00:00

Hello world,

I'm a proud owner of an old PB 180, and today I noticed that it listed among
supported platforms on NetBSD 1.5 pages, so now am considering to install
the real OS there. However, prior to flushing MacOS partition I would
appreciate some bits of information:
- is it possible to install the thing onto a 80 Mb drive? I don't need X11,
but C compiler and basic utilities are highly desirable;
- is PB 1xx series hardware fully supported? For instance, m68k port of
Linux can't deal with old powerbooks' ADB, which makes it practically
unusable in my case.

Regards,
    Eugene.

I've gotten netbsd running on an LCII (that's a 68030, IIRC) with an 80
Mb drive;  I didn't install the man pages, and only installed a small
set of the C libraries, but I have a bootable system with a little bit
of space left over.  HTH.

NetBSD/68k on PowerBook 180?

NetBSD 1.5 installs and runs fine on my PB180C. I can confirm that
unlike Linux the system DOES recognise the ADB bus. As to the disk
size... you will need a bootable Mac partition, but this can be very
smal if you use  a minimum 7.1 system. My only drive is a non standard
one of 1 gig. But I believe the NetBSD will install without X on a very
small partition....

1. PowerBook 180 booting problems

I am new to OpenBSD, but very excited about it. Hopefully this is just a
result of some incredible stupid mistake on my part that can be quickly
remedied. I just installed OpenBSD 2.4 on my PowerBook 180.  It has 14mb
of ram and a 120mb hard drive.  I installed OpenBSD unto a partition
with everything except for the comp24.tar.gz file (and x windows).
Everything went smoothly until I tried to boot.  Every time I  try to
boot to OpenBSD, either from a file on the mac side of the OpenBSD
partition, after this is displayed:

  Bye-bye...
So I sez to him...  The real way
that it should be done is to...

the screen turns white and I get one line of text up at the top of the
screen which reads:

[ preserving 330128 bytes of bsd symbol table]

This happens with booter versions 1.11.1, 1.11.3, and 1.11.4a1 which
were all that I could get ahold of.  I did a search on Dejanews and it
appears that someone else had this same problem with a PowerBook 180 and
OpenBSD 2.3 back on 12/8/98. I didn't see any replies however. Since the
PowerBook 180 is listed as supported I do not know what to think. The
only thing that I could think of is that maybe I needed an older version
of the booter, but I do not know where I could find that. If there is
any other information that I have forgoten to include I would be happy
to post it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank You
Richard
