Booting NetBSD/mac68k off Zip?

Booting NetBSD/mac68k off Zip?

Post by Tyler Cheu » Mon, 06 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Is it possible to boot and run NetBSD/Mac68k off of a Zip disk?  This
would really be interesting since I could theoretically choose between
UNIX and Mac OS whenever I need one or the other.

In an additional note, is it possible to connect with NetBSD to an
AppleTalk network or print to a LaserWriter?

Hello,

I've booted NetBSD off of an EZ-135 cartridge, so it should work fine with a
Zip drive.

Format the entire Zip cartridge for A/UX except for a small Mac partion for
booting the MacOS and running the NetBSD boot utility.  To do this easily,
just copy over the files from your Disk Tools diskette into the small bootable
partition (say 2 MB); then copy the boot utility into this partition.

I had to de-select "Eject cartridge on unmount" in the EZ135 driver.  There
must be a similar option for the Zip driver.

I've seen mention of someone doing this for NetBSD/pmax, which makes
the installation on this platform a lot less awkward.

There's a couple of implementations of AppleTalk for Unix.

There's Colombia Appletalk Protocol (CAP) or 'netatalk' from
UMich.

The latter gives Macs access to NFS-exported disks on Unix servers
via AppleShare, and you can print to LaserWriters.

See http://realm.siteways.nl/lists/atalk/
for details, including the FreeBSD port of 'netatalk'.

1. Formatting Zip for NetBSD/Mac68k?

I am having trouble formatting a Zip disk for NetBSD; I create a A/UX 3.0
setup partition with SilverLining, and then attempt to use the mkfs
application to set up the BSD file system; the program asks for some
esoteric settings, i.e. size of setors, block size, track size, etc.  and
I'm not able to get past this part.  Has anyone been able to set up a Zip
disk for NetBSD?  If so what settings did they use for mkfs?

Thanks in advance,

Tyler
